The best things to do in San Diego fit into four areas: Balboa Park and the zoo, Downtown with the USS Midway and the Coronado ferry, La Jolla with its sea lions and Torrey Pines, and Old Town with Point Loma. Three days covers all four if you group stops by area. Here's what each costs as of October 2026.
These are the stops we'd put on a first trip, with the time each really takes. Prices were checked on each attraction's own page on 31 October 2026.
| Stop | Area | Time to allow | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Balboa Park gardens and museums | Balboa Park | Half a day | Free to walk; each museum charges its own entry |
| San Diego Zoo | Balboa Park | Most of a day | $78 adult, $68 child aged 3 to 11 (1-Day Pass) |
| USS Midway Museum | Downtown waterfront | 4 to 5 hours | $39 adult, $29 youth aged 4 to 12, online |
| Gaslamp Quarter | Downtown | An evening | Free to walk |
| Ferry to Coronado and Coronado Beach | Coronado | Half a day | $9 each way on the ferry, ages 4 and up |
| La Jolla Cove and its sea lions | La Jolla | 2 to 3 hours | Free |
| Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve | La Jolla | 2 to 3 hours | Check parking on the state park page |
| Old Town San Diego State Historic Park | Old Town | 2 to 3 hours | Museums open 10 am to 5 pm daily |
| Cabrillo National Monument | Point Loma | 2 to 3 hours | $20 per car, $10 per person on foot, under 16 free |
Prices change, and the zoo sells cheaper Value Days tickets online on select dates. Check each attraction's website the week you go.
If you only have one day, we'd pick Balboa Park in the morning and La Jolla Cove for sunset. That gives you the city's best park and its best stretch of coast without a long drive.
San Diego is spread out, so the trick is one area per day. Here's the order we'd follow for a three-day trip, with a fourth day if you have it.
Without a car, days 1 and 2 work well on foot, bus and ferry. For La Jolla and Point Loma we'd rent a car or use rideshare for the day.
The park itself is free to walk, but parking isn't anymore. San Diego started charging for Balboa Park parking on 5 January 2026 and revised the rates on 2 March 2026. City residents park free in many lots; visitors pay.
| Lot level | Visitor rate |
|---|---|
| Level 1 (closest lots) | $16 a day, or $10 for 4 hours |
| Level 2 | $10 a day |
| Level 3 | First 3 hours free, then $10 a day |
Rates are from the city's March 2026 update as reported by KPBS. Pay at the lot kiosk, and check the signs, since the city has changed the rules twice this year.
Our advice: park in a Level 3 lot and walk in, which keeps a museum visit inside the free three hours. The San Diego Zoo sells its own tickets, so check the zoo's website for its parking on your day.
Walk the coastal path above La Jolla Cove and you'll see California sea lions on the rocks most of the year, plus harbor seals at the nearby Children's Pool. Keep your distance: NOAA Fisheries asks people and pets to stay at least 50 yards from seals and sea lions on shore, about the length of a football field, and harassing them is prohibited under the Marine Mammal Protection Act.
Go early or close to sunset. Midday is when the coastal path is busiest.
September and October are the best months, in our view: warm days, almost no rain and fewer crowds once the summer school holidays end. Winter is mild and usually cheaper. Late spring is the surprise, with grey, cool mornings that locals call May Gray and June Gloom.
| Month | Average high | Average low | Rain |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 65°F | 48°F | 1.95 in |
| April | 68°F | 55°F | 0.79 in |
| June | 72°F | 61°F | 0.06 in |
| August | 78°F | 67°F | 0.10 in |
| October | 74°F | 60°F | 0.38 in |
| December | 67°F | 49°F | 1.41 in |
These are the National Weather Service's published long-term averages for San Diego's airport. Inland areas run hotter in summer and colder at night in winter; check the forecast for your dates.
On a rainy winter day, Balboa Park's museums and the USS Midway are the easy indoor picks.

San Diego International Airport (SAN) is about 15 minutes from downtown by bus. MTS Route 992 costs $3 one way, including two hours of transfers, and MTS added more frequent and later trips from 6 September 2026.
SAN opened its new Terminal 1 on 23 September 2025 with 19 gates, and Southwest is among the airlines that moved into it. Check your airline's terminal before you're dropped off, since Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 have separate curbs.

Walking the Gaslamp Quarter and the downtown waterfront costs nothing too, and it's the best way to spend your arrival evening.
