How these fees are checked

  • Every figure is read from the airline's own website and linked to the page it came from. Comparison sites, news articles and blogs are never used as a source.
  • The figure is the first standard checked bag, one way, on a standard economy ticket for travel within the US, paid online in advance, without elite status or an airline credit card.
  • A fee is shown only if we checked it in the last 30 days, and a bag shown as included only if we checked it in the last 14. Anything unclear on the airline's page is held for a person to check, and the row says so rather than guessing.
  • Frontier and Sun Country publish no single first-bag fee: their own pages say the price depends on the trip, the travel dates and when the bag is bought. Their rows link to that page instead of showing a number. Hawaiian Airlines is not listed, because its own baggage fee pages could not be found when we last checked.
  • Airlines charge more on some dates, at the airport, and on basic economy fares. Always confirm the price on the airline's page before you fly.
